Neospora

Neosporosis is a reproductive disease caused by the protozoal parasite Neospora caninum. It affects dairy and beef cattle but is also diagnosed in sheep, goats and horses.

Neosporosis is found throughout the world and leads to financial losses through embryonic losses, abortion, culled cattle and reduced milk production. Neosporosis is currently the major cause of abortion in cattle in countries such as New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and California in the USA.

Clinical signs include abortion, between 3 and 9 months of pregnancy, still birth or premature calves.  Occasionally, calves will have a brain disease at birth and repeat abortions possible in the same cow.  Diagnosis consists of post mortem examination of the aborted calf or testing for antibodies in the mother's blood.  As no treatment is available,  prevention is the key to eliminating Neospora from the herd.  Identify infected cattle and cull them, select only seronegative cattle for breeding and  keep cattle food, water, placental membranes, aborted and dead calves away from dogs and foxes.
